Kate Nash – My Best Friend is You

Kate Nash is maybe the best pop singer to first get their start through Myspace. After first gaining an army of fans, Nash unleashed her debut album, Made of Bricks, at the age of 20 in 2007. And after spending a couple years laying low, Nash has finally returned with a darker follow-up, My Best Friend Is You, earlier this week. If you haven’t had occasion to listen to it yet please allow me to urge you to get on it.

Nash’s bratty lyric style continues in abundance for this record, but this is not the Kate Nash you remember. If you’re expecting more sweet, Lily Allen-esque pop songs there are some here. With songs like the catchy first track “Paris” and the album’s lead single “Do Wah Doo,” Nash’s album blazes with the sunny piano melodies, hand claps, and blaring horns that colored her first album.

Although, it seems Nash’s follow-up to her debut is far more of a dark and diverse by comparison. Employing a bit more anger and unleashing her inner-riot grrrl rawrrr, complete with crashing drums, jagged guitar squeals, and far more experimental, layered song construction.

‘My Best Friend Is You’ is a good second album that introduces the world to the new Kate Nash, kind of like the old one but more experienced, less sweet, but with plenty of bite. Personally, I enjoyed her debut album better. This album certainly doesn’t embrace the fun of Made of Bricks, however the album does deliver a handful of good and interesting songs, so a disappointment this is not. This is still a great listen. It will be interesting to see where she goes next with her third album.

Everybody thinks that girl’s so fine
Everybody’s like, “I’ll make her mine”
Everyone thinks she’s a bit of alright
But I think that she’s not so nice
Every guy’s looking in her eyes
Every guy’s checking out her thighs
Everyone thinks that girl’s a lady
But I don’t, I think that girl’s shady

Well I’ll just read a book instead
I don’t care if we’re just friends
I can hang out with myself
I’m old enough now to pretend
Well I’ll just read a book instead
I know that you think she’s best
I don’t even think she cares
I don’t know what you see
There’s nothing there

Bum ba dum ba dum ba dum
Bum bum ba dum ba dum ba dum
Bum bum ba dum ba dum ba dum
Bum bum ba dum ba dum ba dum
[etc.]

I’m a interactive media developer/designer, and new mom to a gorgeous little boy named Liam Ayden Sparrow, who cooks to de-stress and relax. I’m originally from a little peninsula in the South East Asia region of the world called, Malaysia. Although I’ve moved a lot in my life, Chicago, Kuala Lumpur, Australia, Georgia, NYC, and finally back to Chicago; one thing remains the same. The food, because I cook. I grew up around amazing cooks. My mom and my late grandma, and although during my teen years I despised helping my mom in the kitchen, once I grew up and had to moved to a different country for studies, and didn’t have my mom to make meals for me, I realized how lucky I was to have at least some basic cooking skills! And although my mom never really allowed me to help her make anything (I was mostly there to help clean and prep) I did always pay attention to what she was doing in the kitchen. Over a few more years living overseas, and now being married, I’ve had plenty of time to practice my culinary skills and I’ve managed to teach myself a thing or two. I experiment, and create, and I think that’s the best way to learn…anything really.
